Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (44-55) surrendered four home runs to drop game one to the Toledo Mud Hens (50-48) by a score of 8-4, Tuesday at Principal Park.

Toledo opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning on a solo home run by Kerry Carpenter and an RBI single by John Valente. Iowa got the runs right back in their half of the inning, getting RBI singles from Greg Deichmann and Trent Giambrone.

Unfortunately for Iowa, the Mud Hens jumped right back in the third inning with a three-run blast off the bat of Spencer Torkelson. The teams traded blows through the middle innings with four solo home runs.

John Hicks hit two solo shots in the fourth and sixth, while Ryan Kreidler and Jack Lopez hit solo home runs of their own to grow their lead to 7-4. Toledo scored again in the eighth to move their lead to 8-4, and that is where the game would stay.

Luis Castillo, Miguel Diaz and Miguel Del Pozo each threw scoreless frames and struck out a batter to end Iowa's hopes of a comeback and take game one of the series.

POSTGAME NOTES:
