From the Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Josh D. Smith outdueled Brandon Waddell and Indiana University baseball product Sam Travis homered to lift the PawSox to a win in the series opener over Indy last night, 3-2. Jose Osuna drove in both of the Tribe runs in the loss, just the ninth in Indy's last 31 home games. Pawtucket led 2-0 after a half-inning thanks to a Rusney Castillo RBI infield single off the third-base bag and a Travis sacrifice fly to center field. The score remained that way until Osuna laced a two-out single in the fifth, scoring Eric Wood from second base. Wood had reached on a bloop double to start that frame. Travis' seventh homer of the year greeted Montana DuRapau out of the 'pen and proved to be a big insurance run for the visitors. Indy threatened in the ninth against Bobby Poyner (S, 5) as both Pablo Reyes and Kevin Newman reached on singles to start the inning. Jason Martin bunted the duo up 90 feet before an Osuna sac fly cut the Tribe deficit to one. Jacob Stallings flew out on the next pitch, however, giving the PawSox the 3-2 win.

DIFFERENT DAY, SAME LINEUP: For the first time this season, manager Brian Esposito's starting lineup for the Indians is identical to the prior game, both from an order and positional standpoint. Oddly enough, Pawtucket's starting nine is the same order of nine from last night's contest, with only three positional changes. Jantzen Witte has moved across the diamond from third to first, Brandon Phillips is at third after DH'ing last night and Josh Ockimey has gone from DH to first base.

THREE OVER .300: Kevin Newman (.307, 4th), Kevin Kramer (.302, 6th) and Pablo Reyes (.300, 7th) are among the top seven batting leaders in the International League. Since becoming the Triple-A affiliate of the Pirates in 2005, there have been only three Tribe players to finish with an average at or above .300 while qualifying among league leaders. Brian Myrow hit .307 in 2009, good for seventh in the IL. Then in 2011, Matt Hague (.309, 6th) and John Bowker (.306, 7th) finished among IL leaders with averages north of .300.

RISP-Y BUSINESS: The Indians finished 1-for-12 with RISP last night, leaving 11 total runners on base. In the three-game set vs. Lehigh Valley, the Tribe hit .393 (11-for-28) in those situations. For the season, Indy is batting .269 with RISP, the second-best mark in the IL in those situations behind only Durham (.274). Jose Osuna (.391, 27-for-69) and Wyatt Mathisen (.318, 21-for-66) have been Indy's best bats with RISP this season.

BY THE NUMBERS - .375 / .346 / .302: Three current Indians have averages over .300 when leading off an inning. Eric Wood is the best of the bunch with a .375 clip (18-for-48), with 10 of those 18 hits going for extra bases (3 HR, 7 2B). Ryan Lavarnway is batting .346 (18-for-52) with 1 HR, 1 3B and 1 2B when leading off a frame, and Pablo Reyes is at .302 (16-for-53) with 2 HR and 3 2B.
