Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - The Pawtucket Red Sox scored two eighth-inning runs and received a stout performance from the bullpen all night, as the PawSox downed the Indianapolis Indians, 3-2, on Saturday at Victory Field.
Down 2-0 entering the seventh inning, the PawSox scored a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to secure a third straight series win ahead of tomorrow's finale against Indianapolis. Pawtucket has now won six of its last eight games. Four different relievers combined to allow just five hits to the Indians.
On a bullpen day, veteran right-hander Fernando Rodriguez Jr. fired three innings of one-run ball in his fifth spot start of the season, fanning a pair and only ceding two hits. Right-hander Travis Lakins followed and gave up a run in two innings, before southpaw Robby Scott (W, 3-3) chipped in with two hitless stanzas. Sidearmer Trevor Kelley (S, 1) then locked up his first career Triple-A save by handling the final two frames.
Pawtucket shortstop and leadoff man Tzu-Wei Lin (2-for-4, R, 3B, RBI) and third baseman Brandon Phillips (3-for-4, R, 2 2B) provided the bulk of the output for an offense that outhit Indianapolis, 8-5. The 37-year-old former three-time National League All-Star has hit safely in seven of his last eight games and is 8-for-16 with six doubles over his last four games.
Indianapolis starter J.T. Brubaker allowed merely one run in 6.2 innings with five strikeouts and no walks. Reliever Steven Brault (L, 0-1) gave up a pair of runs and recorded one out.
Indianapolis climbed out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a pair of hits.
In the home half of the fourth, Indianapolis extended its lead to 2-0 with an RBI groundout.
Pawtucket sliced the deficit in half, 2-1, in the top of the seventh inning when designated hitter Josh Ockimey pulled an RBI single into right field to score Phillips.
The PawSox then tied the game an inning later in the eighth on an RBI triple from Lin that reeled in catcher Oscar Hernández. Moments later, second baseman Tony Renda chopped a high groundout that plated Lin and handed Pawtucket a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Pawtucket right fielder Kyle Wren made a sterling diving catch to protect the one-run margin with two runners aboard.
The PawSox conclude their three-game weekend series at Victory Field on Sunday at 1:35 p.m. Pawtucket right-hander Josh A. Smith (3-4, 4.30) is scheduled to oppose Indianapolis righty Tyler Eppler (12-5, 3.67). Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM and 104.7 FM) and throughout the PawSox Radio Network begins with the pre-game show at 1:05 p.m.
