Charlotte Knights News Release
(ROCHESTER, NY) -- RHP Michael Kopech struck-out nine batters over seven shutout innings, and left fielder Eloy Jiménez launched his 10th home run of the season as the Charlotte Knights shut out the Rochester Red Wings by a score of 8-0 on Saturday night in game two of their three-game series from Frontier Field in Rochester, NY. Saturday's shutout was Charlotte's eighth of the season. The Knights will go for the three-game series sweep over the Red Wings in Sunday's finale.
Kopech (6-7, 3.81) dazzled on the mound for the Knights on Saturday. The 22-year-old allowed just five hits over his seven shutout innings en route to his sixth win of the season. Kopech fanned nine batters for his second consecutive start and now leads all of Minor League Baseball in strikeouts this season with 161. Since June 20th, he is 4-2 with a 2.33 ERA in 10 games started with 79 strikeouts over that span (58.0 innings pitched).
The Charlotte offense backed Kopech's solid start with eight runs on 15 hits. The eight-run outburst was the second in as many days for the Knights, who won for the 54th time this season. First baseman Matt Skole and shortstop José RondÃÅn had three hits apiece. Additionally, designated hitter Ryan Cordell, catcher Seby Zavala, and right fielder Trayce Thompson all tallied two hits apiece.
Jiménez, who is ranked as the top prospect in the Chicago White Sox system, also finished the game with two hits. He connected on his 10th home run of the season with the Knights in the third inning off Rochester RHP Fernando Romero (4-4, 3.30), who was charged with the loss. Jiménez, who began the season with the Birmingham Barons, now has a total of 20 home runs combined in 2018 between Double-A and Triple-A.
The Knights will conclude their three-game series against the Rochester Red Wings on Sunday afternoon from Frontier Field. Pre-game radio coverage of Sunday's 1:05 p.m. game is set for 12:50 p.m. on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action.
