ABOUT LAST NIGHT, THE OPENER: After a 20-minute delay to begin the doubleheader, the Indians fended off a late comeback effort by the Redbirds to win the opener last night, 8-7. They wasted no time jumping on major league rehabber Jack Flaherty, with Kevin Padlo making his Indians presence known courtesy of a three-run home run down the left field line in the first. Indianapolis added one run in both the second and third innings before bookending its scoring with another three-run spot in the fourth. Trailing 8-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning in the first game, the Redbirds plated two in the fifth and struck for four runs in the seventh and final inning before pinch hitter Alec Burleson lined out to center fielder Jack Suwinski with the tying run at third base to end the game.

ABOUT LAST NIGHT, THE CLOSER: In Game 2, it was Memphis that struck first and often. In the first inning, first baseman Luken Baker ripped a two-run double to the opposite field. An RBI double for right fielder Clint Coulter extended Memphis' lead to 3-0 in the third, and after two more crossed in the fifth, designated hitter Moises Gomez and Burleson hit back-to-back home runs to finish the scoring in the sixth. Redbirds' left-hander Connor Thomas didn't need much run support, throwing a 7.0-inning complete-game shutout with nine strikeouts and just one walk. It was just the fourth complete-game shutout in the International League this season.

PADLO'S GOT POP: Kevin Padlo made a statement in his Pirates organization debut last night, reaching base safely in all four of his plate appearances and going a triple shy of the cycle after ending Game 1 with a walk. He opened the game with a three-run homer, singled in the third and roped an RBI double in the fourth to drive in a team-leading four RBI. His three-hit day tied his season high, and his four RBI performance narrowly trails a six-RBI game on May 1 with Triple-A Sacramento at Albuquerque. Padlo was claimed off waivers by Pittsburgh from Seattle on Sunday, and in 62 total Triple-A games between Sacramento, Tacoma and Indianapolis, he owns a .252 average (57-for-226) with 24 extra-base hits and 40 RBI.

MARTIN'S MULTI HITS: Mason Martin recorded his fifth multi-hit performance in nine August games in Game 1 last night, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. His five multi-hit games tied his most in a month this season through 10 team games, following his April Player of the Month campaign when he had five multi-hit performances in 20 games. He has hit safely in six games in the month with a .414 average (12-for-29), three extra-base hits, seven runs scored and five RBI. He has also reached base safely in eight consecutive games and has a .514 on-base percentage for the month.

ACES WINNING: Roansy Contreras earned his first career Triple-A win last night with three runs allowed over 5.0 innings. The hard-throwing right-hander was backed by eight runs of support, with Eric Hanhold clinching Contreras' win by stranding the game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Through nine starts with the Indians this season, he is 1-1 with a 3.15 ERA (12er/34.1ip) and 46 strikeouts. After being optioned by Pittsburgh prior to the All-Star Break, Contreras has surrendered six earned runs in 14.0 innings with just two walks compared to 22 strikeouts. In contrast, he is 3-2 with a 3.78 ERA (21er/50.0ip) and 50 strikeouts in 12 appearances (nine starts) with Pittsburgh.

TODAY: After taking five of seven games against Louisville last week at Victory Field, the Indians will look to even the series at two games apiece tonight at 8:05 PM ET at AutoZone Park. From June 21-26, the Indians and Redbirds split their first six-game series at Victory Field. Since 2021, which was the first time in history that the two teams met in the regular season, the Indians hold an 9-6 record against Memphis. Tonight, former Redbird hurler Johan Oviedo will make his first start and second appearance with Indianapolis since joining the team after the trade deadline. Countering for Memphis will be Garrett Williams, who made two relief appearances against Indy last season. In those outings, he surrendered three earned runs in 2.0 combined innings with no strikeouts.

DUGOUT HOPPING: Johan Oviedo, who was traded to Pittsburgh as part of a package that sent Jose Quintana and former Indianapolis Indian Chris Stratton to St. Louis on Aug. 2, will make his first Pirates organization start tonight against his former team. Facing the Redbirds in a ballpark he used to call home, Oviedo made his Indians debut on Tuesday and surrendered one hit over 1.0 scoreless frame. Prior to being traded, he split the season between Memphis (as a starter) and St. Louis (as a reliever). In 14 appearances (one start) in the big leagues, he went 2-1 with a 3.20 ERA (9er/25.1ip) and 26 strikeouts. That comes in stark contrast to his minor league starting numbers as he went 4-2 with a 5.58 ERA (31er/50.0ip) and 51 strikeouts in 10 starts with Memphis. Oviedo was in the big leagues at the time of the trade and had not given up multiple runs in an outing since June 4 (2) at Chicago (NL).

THIS DAY IN 1997: Trailing 6-1 following a two-run spot by Nashville in the top of the seventh, the Indians erupted for five runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to walk off Nashville at Victory Field, 8-7. Indians leadoff hitter Pat Watkins finished 3-for-4 with two home runs, his second of which came in game-winning fashion to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning. Keith Mitchell ripped two doubles and drove in two in the comeback win.
