Charlotte Knights News Release
(ALLENTOWN, PA) -- When you're hot, you're hot.
The red-hot Charlotte Knights received strong pitching and timely hitting on Friday night en route to a 4-1 win over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in game four of the six-game series from Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, PA. With the win, the Knights have now won three consecutive games and nine of the last 12 games. Currently, the Knights are the hottest team in the International League.
In the first inning, catcher Carlos Pérez added his team-leading 58th RBI of the season when his sacrifice-fly scored center fielder Mark Payton from the third base. The Knights added to the 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning thanks to third baseman Jake Burger, who reached base on an error by right fielder Chris Sharpe. The error allowed shortstop Yolbert Sánchez to score the team's second run of the game. Sanchez, who extended his hit streak to a season-high 12 games, finished the night with three hits.
One inning later, left fielder Tyler Neslony doubled home designated hitter Romy Gonzalez to give the Knights a 3-0 lead at that point. Neslony finished the game 3-for-4 with an RBI. The Knights tacked on one more run in the top of the ninth inning on a solo home run from second baseman Laz Rivera - his seventh long ball of the season.
LHP Kyle Kubat was sharp over four innings of work. Kubat, who started for the 10th time this season, allowed just one run over four innings -- a solo home run to Lehigh Valley slugger Josh Ockimey. That was the only run the 'Pigs would muster against the Knights on Friday.
A total of five Charlotte relievers combined to hold Lehigh Valley scoreless over the final five innings of the game. RHP Kade McClure (2-3, 5.77) earned the win out of the Charlotte 'pen after he tossed a scoreless fifth inning. RHP Daniel Winkler earned the save despite allowing two hits in the final inning of the game. It was his second save of the season.
The Knights tallied a game-high 12 hits on the night. Payton added two hits and is now hitting a team-best .285 on the season.
The two teams will continue the six-game series on Saturday night with first pitch at 6:35 p.m. from Coca-Cola Park. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and www.CharlotteKnights.com.
