Bins Homers, Indians Spin Shutout in Memphis, 3-0

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Indianapolis Indians pitching staff combined to throw their sixth shutout of the season in a 3-0 win over the Memphis Redbirds on Friday night at AutoZone Park.

The Indians (53-54) opened their night offensively in the top of the second inning against Memphis starter Garrett Williams (L, 0-3) with a two-run home run to left-center field by catcher Carter Bins. Williams left a breaking ball over the heart of the plate in a 1-2 count, and Bins pummeled his seventh blast of the year. Indianapolis added another run in the sixth thanks to a leadoff triple to center field from right fielder Cal Mitchell and a run-producing ground ball single from third baseman Kevin Padlo.

After new trade acquisition Johan Oviedo fired two hitless innings in his first start for the Indians, right-hander Noe Toribio (W, 3-1) followed with three-plus scoreless frames. After Toribio allowed a leadoff triple and a walk to open the bottom of the sixth, southpaw Cam Vieaux entered, struck out the league's leading hitter in Alec Burleson, and got rehabber Juan Yepez to ground into an inning-ending double play. Vieaux followed with two more hitless innings and accounted for four of the six strikeouts for the Indians pitching staff, with the other two coming in the ninth from right-hander Eric Hanhold (S, 7).

The Indians silenced the Redbirds (57-51) for the team's sixth shutout win this season after being shut out in game two of the double-header on Thursday night. Of the last three shutouts thrown by the Indians, two of them have come against Memphis, with the first of which coming in a 2-0 win at Victory Field on June 22nd.

The Indians and Redbirds play the fifth of a six-game series on Saturday night at AutoZone Park, with first pitch coming at 7:35 PM ET. RHP Jerad Eickhoff (5-4, 4.56), the Indians' Player of the Month in July, gets the ball for Indianapolis. The Cardinals' top pitching prospect, LHP Matthew Liberatore (5-4, 4.77), opposes for Memphis.
