Goin' For Two

Much like last Sunday against Spokane, Friday saw the Winterhawks race out to an early lead through 20 minutes. But unlike Sunday, the Hawks kept up the pressure, added to their lead, and snuffed out any chance of a comeback with stifling defense and a ruthless power play en route to a 5-1 win.

Tonight, they'll try to make it two in a row in the rematch with a very physical Victoria side. The Royals made contact a priority in last night's tilt, but sometimes cost themselves as Portland rattled off three power-play tallies when the hosts took it too far. With the first meeting out of the way, look for the Hawks to match that physical tone while they try to again control the game with speed in transition and quick goals off the rush.

Powered Up

The WHL's top-ranked power play was at it again on Friday, going 3-for-6 with the man-advantage to fuel the Hawks' 5-1 win. It was the fourth consecutive game that Portland has tallied two or more on the power play and third straight with three or more. The unit now sits at 38.3% on the year with 23 goals on 60 opportunities - more than 10% better than the second-ranked Tri-City Americans (27.8%).

Perhaps even more impressive is Portland's 48.1% success rate on road power plays, with 13 goals on 27 chances. The Winterhawks have struck on the power play in five of six road contests, and have three or more PPGs in three of those six away games.

Streakin'

With last night's victory, the Winterhawks have tallied points in seven straight, matching their season-opening streak from the first seven contests. Tonight presents a chance to mark a new high, a potential eight-game stretch with at least a point that would represent half of the team's season to date. In order to do so, they'll want to get on the board first and get to their game early, just like they did on Friday.

"We talked a lot about our start coming into this building. It's been tough in years past. They are a good team and play good systems and they're really aggressive so the start is really important. That was a really big part of the win today. I just think that really built the foundation for the game and the guys really stuck to the plan. Overall it was a really solid game," said goaltender Dante Giannuzzi following the win.
