Family Day Matinee

While we celebrate Presidents' Day here in the States, today is also a provincial holiday known as Family Day in Canada! With 18 teams in action and each game being hosted by a Canadian team, all WHL matchups are dropping the puck a little earlier in the afternoon. The Winterhawks played well in their own matinee during Kids Day at the VMC last month, where they romped past Spokane 6-1 in a lunchtime tilt. A quick early strike and a multi-goal first-intermission lead helped the Hawks control that game early - with that blueprint in mind, the Hawks know they'll need to start on time to come away with two points at CN Centre.

Playoff Preview?

As things stand now, Portland (3rd in the west) and Prince George (6th in the west) would meet again in the 2023 postseason in a rematch of their 2022 first-round series. The Hawks swept both the regular-season series (4-0-0-0) and the playoff matchup (4-0-0-0) in 2021-22, but this version of the Cougars poses more of a threat. Today's tilt presents another opportunity for these two clubs to feel each other out ahead of what could be a spicy playoff rematch, and the Hawks will be keen to assert themselves against a team they handled with ease last season.

Captain Klassen & Chef Stef

A bumpy start to the road trip hasn't slowed down the Hawks' two leading scorers as Gabe Klassen and James Stefan have each found the scoresheet in both contests on the current road swing. The two have mirrored each other over the last week, with Klassen assisting Stefan's goal in Spokane and the latter returning the favor in Kelowna on Saturday. Stefan hit the 150-point milestone with his assist on Saturday, and Klassen sits two points shy of the same mark. The two 19-year-old snipers have led the way offensively this month - look for them to step up again as Portland seeks a big road win in PG.
