Giannuzzi's Shutout Helps Hawks Earn Point in PG

February 20, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

Prince George, B.C. - Dante Giannuzzi stopped all 30 shots through 65 minutes to pick up his second shutout of the year but the Winterhawks (36-13-2-3) ultimately fell 1-0 to the Prince George Cougars (25-23-4-0) in a seven-round shootout.

Prince George's Tyler Brennan stopped 31 of 31 in his own shutout performance for the hosts.

The goalie duel kicked off early with each team's netminder standing tall through 20 minutes, including a handful of Giannuzzi dandies during PG power plays. Portland mounted pressure in the second period but Brennan had the answers at the other end. With the game in the balance, both teams elevated their play, but again the goaltenders (and the goalposts) denied any scoring through regulation time.

Overtime saw several prime opportunities for both teams - including back-to-back breakaways for Portland and Prince George in the final minute - but neither Giannuzzi nor Brennan would give an inch. In the shootout, Luca Cagnoni finally put the puck over the line for Portland in round two, but Ondrej Becher soon responded in the third round to keep the Cougars alive. Giannuzzi and Brennan traded saves for the next three rounds before Zac Funk's tally sealed the second point for the Cougars in round seven.

The two teams are back in action to wrap up the season series at CN Centre tomorrow night at 7:00 P.M.
