Flush It
Wednesday's loss to Spokane was hardly the way the Hawks wanted to start this road trip, but this late in the season, there's no panic in their game. Strong leadership in captain Gabe Klassen, leading scorers James Stefan and Robbie Fromm-Delorme and veteran netminder Dante Giannuzzi can help a young group keep level after each game - never too high, never too low, regardless of the outcome.
"We know we've been playing well as of late, with tonight being the exception. I think we know what we're capable of and how we can play. We know every team in this league is good and every night is a different challenge. We're confident with our game and we're just trying to get it going on this road trip," said Klassen after the game.
With another chance to get on a roll tonight against Kelowna, look for the Hawks' veterans to set the tone early.
Cristall Clear
Kelowna got a big boost earlier this week when top 2023 NHL Draft prospect Andrew Cristall returned from a 14-game absence to record his first career hat-trick en route to a four-goal showing. Cristall leads all Rockets skaters with seven points against the Winterhawks this season, and netted the overtime winner in his team's lone victory against Portland. Despite missing more than a month, Cristall ranks 10th in league scoring with 66 points in 37 games and has consistently been ranked as a first-round talent for the upcoming NHL Draft.
Last Trip to Canada
It's the final time across the 49th parallel (at least in the regular season) as the Hawks wrap up a pair of season series tonight against the Rockets and on Monday and Tuesday against the Prince George Cougars. Portland has had an up-and-down experience in the great white north this season, notching a 7-6-0-0 record in road games against B.C. and East Division clubs after starting off with four straight wins in Canada. Three opportunities to maintain and improve that winning mark, and with playoffs around the corner, the Hawks will be keen to build confidence against Canadian clubs.
