Ftorek Named In Glas Co ECHL Player of the Week
February 7, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
CINCINNATI, Ohio - Cincinnati Cyclones forward Sam Ftorek has been named In Glas Co ECHL Player of the Week. Ftorek, 32, collected five goals (two of them game winners) and two assists for seven points last week as the Cyclones went 3-0-1 and continue to lead the North Division of the American Conference.
Ftorek, a native of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, is the second Cyclones player this season to collect a weekly honor from the ECHL. Cedrick Desjardins was twice the Rbk Hockey Goaltender of the Week (week of Oct. 15-21 and week of Jan. 8-14). Sam is the first forward/defenseman from Cincinnati to win the Player of the Week honors from the league since Garret Prosofsky claimed the title during the span of March 8-14, 2004. It is the eleventh time in the history of this club that the team has had a Player of the Week from the ECHL.
Last week, Ftorek had two goal games against Trenton on Friday (Feb. 2, a 4-1 win) and at Wheeling on Saturday (Feb. 3, also a 4-1 win)-netting the game winning goal in both contests. In Sunday's (Feb. 4) game with Trenton, with the Cyclones trailing 5-3 with 4:24 to play, Sam scored a goal and assisted on the goal that forced overtime in a 6-5 loss. For the week, he had five goals, two assists, seven points, two game winning goals and a +3 plus/minus rating.
Ftorek, 32, is in his ninth professional season and has played in 526 games, scoring 136 goals, adding 182 assists and collecting 318 points. He began the 2007 calendar year by collecting points in each of the first eight games (4-5-9). Sam's 300th point as a professional came against Wheeling back on Dec. 22, 2006. On December 15, Ftorek established a season-best, netting goals 27 seconds apart in a win against Johnstown.
"Sam has been our best player the last couple of weeks," Head Coach Chuck Weber said. "He does everything necessary to make this team better and he is appreciated for his efforts. He is a leader by example and is a key reason this team is in first place right now."
On behalf of Sam Ftorek, a case of pucks will be donated to a Cincinnati area youth hockey organization by In Glas Co, the exclusive puck supplier for the ECHL. Since beginning its sponsorship of the award in 2000-01, In Glas Co has donated more than 15,000 pucks to youth hockey organizations in ECHL cities.
The Cincinnati Cyclones play their only game of the week tonight against the Johnstown Chiefs at U.S. Bank Arena at 7:30pm. Tickets for all Cyclones games can be purchased at the U.S. Bank Arena box office, all Ticketmaster outlets including select Kroger stores, charge by phone at 513-562-4949 or online at ticketmaster.com.
