Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -Derek Gustafson stopped all 25 shots he faced as Alaska stormed to its eighth straight win at home with three goals in a span of 3:44, en route to a 4-0 whitewash of Fresno before 4,590 Tuesday at Sullivan Arena.

The Aces flurry came midway through the first period, and once again, their power play broke the game open. Coming into Tuesday, Alaska had scored 11 goals while on the man advantage in its last five games, and Joe Talbot provided the only goal the Aces would need with his 10th in 20 games this season on their first power play opportunity on the night. Trying to force a centering pass to Stephen Wood, Talbot instead saw Falcon defenseman Cory Murphy deflect the puck right back to him, and his wrist shot caught goalie Scott Stirling hopelessly out of position at 11:55.

45 seconds later, Vladimir Novak pounced on a loose rebound and scored while falling to the ice. His 16th goal matched a career-high and put the Aces up 2-0. Kimbi Daniels buried a perfect Barrett Heisten pass on another power play at 15:39 to increase the lead to 3-0 before the break. Alaska out-shot Fresno 18-5 in the first period and 16-8 in the second before capping the scoring on a brilliant individual move by defenseman Steven Later midway through the third. Later took a pass at center ice and drove down the left wing, bringing the puck from his backhand to his forehand before tucking home his fifth of the year with 9:39 left in the game.

Gustafson has won 11 of his last 12 starts and is 15-2-1 over his last 18, a run that began with two wins over the Falcons. The Aces (31-12-2 overall) have won eight in a row at home and are 13-1-1 at Sullivan Arena since losing to Fresno December 6. Tomorrow's rematch with the Falcons (24-16-4) starts at 7:15 p.m., and after a day off, Phoenix visits for three games, beginning Friday at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.alaskaaces.com or by calling 258-ACES. All Alaska Aces games are broadcast live on flagship station KFQD 750 AM.
