Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Manitoba Moose and the Vancouver Canucks, head into the second half of the home and home series versus the Idaho Steelheads, and suffered their first loss in five road games. The game was decided in the third period, 2-1.
The Salmon Kings hooked the first tally of the game at 1:56 into the opening stanza. Team leader in assists, F.P. Guenette, carried the puck to the Steelheads zone and shovelled a pass to Defenseman Seamus Young up the right wing, and Young snapped a wristshot for his eighth goal of the season.
Idaho pressed in the closing minutes of the first and tied the game 1-1 with 3:37 remaining. The rebound from Kory Scoran's shot was scooped up by Tuomas Mikkonen and he slipped it past Netminder Bryan Bridges for ninth goal of the season.
The second period started and finished with both teams cranking out odd man rushes, but the goaltenders kept the game locked at a 1-1 tie. Victoria outshot Idaho 13-7 in the second.
Colin Shields scored his 11th goal of the season to earn the 2-1 Idaho advantage. At 1:15 into the third frame, Victoria tried to clear the zone but the puck landed on Shield's stick as he was circling on the right of the crease, and his quick shot squeezed under the left pad of Bridges. Idaho Netminder Steve Silverthorn secured the victory despite the Salmon Kings outshooting the Steelheads 31-21.
Final:
Silverthorn captured his 20th win of the season, and Bridges was dealt his 16th loss. Neither team scored with a man advantage; Victoria was 0 for 4 and Idaho went 0 for 2. The Salmon Kings (19-28-0-1) settle into the middle game of the three-game set in Boise against the Steelheads (24-17-2-1) on Friday starting at 7:10 p.m. (MT).
Notes:
- Seamus Young leads the National Conference in goals by a rookie defenseman (8).
- F.P. Guenette leads the Salmon Kings in assists (27); he is 11th in the National Conference.
After the set in Idaho, the Salmon Kings return home for a three-game series versus the Pacific-division Stockton Thunder, starting February 14th at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
