(Sauget, IL) - Orrin Sears hit a grand slam in the third inning and Chuck Weaver (4-1) took care of the rest as the Florence Freedom (18-22) knocked off the Gateway Grizzlies (30-14) by a final score of 6-1 Thursday night at GCS Ballpark.

With the win the Freedom snap Gateway's nine-game winning streak and Florence also snaps their own five-game road losing streak.

Florence played long ball from the start as Sam Eberle smacked his third home run of the year in the first to give the Freedom a 1-0 lead.

Gateway starter Aaron Newcomb (7-2) was victimized by the long ball again in the second as Rob Kelly took him deep to extend Florence's lead to 2-0.

In the third inning Adam Taylor got things started with a single to right. One out later Ben Kline doubled Taylor to third. Then with two away Joe Staley drew a walk to load the bases. That's when Sears smacked a Newcomb offering over the right-center field wall for the Freedom's first grand slam of the season and it was 6-0 in Florence's favor.

Weaver walked a season-high three batters but only gave up three hits over his seven innings of scoreless ball. He struck out four along the way to his fourth victory of the season. He lowered his league-best ERA to 1.21 on the season.

Gateway's lone run came in the eighth on a Niko Vasquez RBI single as Daniel DeSimone and Jorge Marban pitched the final two innings for Florence.

Florence opens a three-game series with the Washington Wild Things on Friday at UC Health Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. If you can't make the game, all the action can be heard on http://www.allinbroadcasting.com/Florence.html.
