Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners dropped both halves of their doubleheader against the Washington Wild Things by 2-1 and 3-1 final scores on Wednesday at CONSOL Energy Park in Washington.

In both games, the Miners held 1-0 leads before the Wild Things came back to win. In game one, with runners at first and second in the second inning as Steve Marino was hit by a pitch and Ryan Cavan singled, Phil Butler drove in Marino with a bloop RBI single to center field.

But after Stewart Ijames tied the game with a solo home run in the fourth, the game went to extra innings. Matt Bywater gave up just Ijames' home run over seven innings, allowing five hits and one walk, but the winning run came home after Daniel Poma was hit by a pitch from Stew Brase (1-2) in the eighth and went to third on a single. The next pitch was a wild pitch, bringing Poma home as the Wild Things walked off.

In the third inning of game two, after Matt Howard reached on catcher's interference, he was sacrificed to second by Matt Jones. Jay Austin then snuck a ground ball inside the third base bag for an RBI double as the Miners led 1-0. But Washington struck for three runs in the fifth after Poma was again hit by a pitch. C.J. Beatty doubled off the left field wall with one out, and then a passed ball with Ijames batting scored the tying run before Connor Lewis hit a double of his own to bring home two more runs.

The Miners got the tying run to the plate in the sixth and seventh innings, but could not come back in dropping the first two games to the first-place Wild Things. They will seek to salvage the finale of the series on Thursday night at 6:05 p.m. central time. Rick Teasley will go up against Shawn Blackwell in the matchup on the mound.
