Freedom End Grizzlies Nine-Game Win Streak

SAUGET, Ill. - The Florence Freedom ended the Gateway Grizzlies nine-game win streak with a 6-1 victory in front of 5,911 fans Thursday night at GCS Ballpark.

The loss was the Grizzlies (30-14) first since June 22nd and just their second at home in their last 14 home games. Gateway fell to 21-5 at home this season.

Florence (18-22) took a 6-0 lead after three innings and held on to avoid the sweep and snap a five-game road losing streak. Sam Eberle hit a solo home run in the first inning, Rob Kelly blasted a second inning solo home run and Orrin Sears capped off the Freedom scoring with a third inning grand slam.

Aaron Newcomb (7-2) allowed all six runs and eight hits in six innings. The right-hander from Carlyle, Ill. struck out three and walked three to suffer his first home loss of the year.

Gateway collected just five hits on the night, with the only run coming across on a Niko Vasquez RBI single in the eighth inning.

Madison Beaird led the Grizzlies offense, going 2-for-3 with a double.

The Grizzlies continue their homestand Friday night against the River City Rascals at GCS Ballpark. Right-hander Tyler Thompson (2-0) will make start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 6:05 with postgame fireworks.
