Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, PA-No stone was left unturned by the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, as they showcased premier offense, defense and pitching en-route to a series-sweeping victory over the Southern Illinois Miners by a final score of 7-1. Shawn Blackwell remained undefeated on the season, hurling a complete game for the Wild Things, while Miners starter Rick Teasley suffered his first loss of the season.

Washington quickly gained the momentum in the contest when left fielder CJ Beatty stroked a two-run double that plated center fielder Daniel Poma and shortstop Garrett Rau in the top of the first. Beatty continued his success at the plate, leading Washington with a 3-5 performance with two RBI and scoring once himself.

On the defensive side, Blackwell cruised through the Southern Illinois bats. Through five innings, Blackwell allowed just four hits and struck out five Miners. Quality defense backed him up and carried his shutout bid late into the game.

The Wild Things added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning thanks to run-scoring knocks from first baseman Stewart Ijames and designated hitter Maxx Garrett to push the score to 5-0. Poma and catcher Jim Vahalik added even more security runs in the seventh, giving Washington a late 7-0 lead.

Blackwell's shutout bid ended in the top of the ninth inning when a sacrifice fly by shortstop Ryan Cavan plated Southern Illinois first baseman Chris Burke. The one run was all that resulted from the ninth for the Miners, giving the game and series win to Washington.

The Wild Things look to extend their winning streak as they take to the road for a three-game series against the Florence Freedom. This away series serves as a bit of revenge for Washington, as it was Florence who swept the Wild Things in their opening series of the 2014 season. The first game is scheduled for a 6:35 p.m. start on Friday, July 4. All the action can be heard live on WJPA 95.3 FM.
