Freedom Rout CornBelters 11-3
July 31, 2013 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
The Florence Freedom routed the Normal Cornbelters 11-3 Wednesday night at University of Cincinnati Medical Center Stadium in the first game of an important three game series. Florence entered play just one game ahead of Normal in the Frontier League Wild Card standings.
The Freedom wasted no time jumping on Normal starter Jose Trinidad, scoring four in the first, the big blow a three-run home run off the bat of David Harris. The blast was Harris' eleventh of the season and helped the Freedom to a 4-0 lead after one inning.
Normal cut the lead in half in the top of the second on a two-run homer by third baseman Ryan Lashley that made it a 4-2 game.
Normal would push within a run in the third on an RBI groundout by Oscar Garcia that cut the Freedom lead to 4-3.
The game would stay 4-3 until the fifth as Trinidad (L, 4-4) and Freedom starter Aaron Wilkerson would throw zeros on the scoreboard. Wilkerson would leave with nobody out in the fifth, giving way to Brent Choban (W, 3-5) who would pitch 2 2/3 innings to earn the win.
From there it would be all Freedom. They got two runs in the fifth on a two-run Jacob Tanis double that made it a 6-3 Freedom lead.
They would add three more in the sixth, on a Bobby Joe Tannehill double and a Cole Miles sacrifice fly, and two more in the seventh on a two-run Byron Wiley homer that pushed the lead to its final mark of 11-3.
The Freedom and Cornbelters will play game two of three tomorrow night at UCMC Stadium. First pitch is at 6:35 with gates opening one hour earlier on Thirsty Thursday featuring dollar beers, sodas and ice cream sandwiches. Tickets are available at the UCMC Stadium ticket office or by calling (859) 594-HITS. The game can be heard on radio station 1320-AM WCVG and online at gospel1320.com.
