
CornBelters Drop Series Opener at Florence

FLORENCE, Ky. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, fell by the largest margin of the season in an 11-3 loss to the Florence Freedom on Wednesday night at University of Cincinnati Medical Center Stadium. The CornBelters continue the series with the middle game in suburban Cincinnati .
The Freedom reached CornBelters starter Jose Trinidad for four hits in the first inning, including a two-out three-run homer to left center by David Harris and an RBI double by Jim Jacquot.
The CornBelters used the long ball to cut the deficit in half in the second inning as Ryan Lashley lifted a long two-run drive over the left field fence to cut the Freedom lead to 4-2.
The Belters closed to a 4-3 deficit in the third when Santiago Chirino and Eric Arce led off with singles and moved to second and third on a sacrifice. Chirino scored on a ground ball fielder's choice by Oscar Garcia for the frame's only run.
Florence drew two walks in the fifth inning and scored them both on a two-out double to the left center field wall by Jacob Tanis to increase the Freedom lead to 6-3. The Freedom tagged reliever Ross Davis for four hits in the sixth inning including a two-run triple by Bobby Tannehill and a sacrifice fly RBI from Cole Miles to push the advantage to 9-3. Byron Wiley clubbed a two-run homer to right in the seventh for an 11-3 Freedom lead.
Brent Choban (3-5) earned the win in relief while Trinidad (4-4) took the loss.
