Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie offense went to work at All Pro Freight Stadium on Wednesday night, scoring eight times on 15 hits, as the Crushers took the opening game of the series, 8-3 over the Washington Wild Things.
The win for Lake Erie (34-30) gives them 17 in the month of July, capping their finest month of the season to date. The loss for the Wild Things (30-34) was their fifth in seven games against the Crushers this season.
The long ball loomed large for both teams in the early goings, as both clubs combined to hit four bombs in the first three innings of the contest, including three in the first inning.
A pair of solo shots gave the Wild Things a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. C.J. Beatty hit the first one, his 11th of the season and his third in seven games against the Crushers. Mark Samuelson went deep two batters later to cap the inning.
Lake Erie responded with a trio of runs in the bottom of the first. Craig Hertler reached on Shain Stoner's error to start the inning, and advanced to second on Daniel Bowman's first of three singles on the night. The Crushers hadn't homered over the first 12 games of the second half, until Andrew Davis belted a three-run bomb, his 13th of the season to give the Crushers a 3-2 lead.
Washington used another solo homer to tie the game in the top of the third, when Quincy Latimore went deep for the first time this season, before the Crushers answered a half inning later.
Bowman and Davis did the damage in the bottom of the third. Bowman smacked a single to start the inning, stole second base, and scored moments later on Davis's base hit to left field.
The Crushers used a two-out rally to pull away in the fifth inning. The bases were loaded with two out, when Hertler singled through the right side to score Russ Moldenhauer. Seth Granger followed with a base hit to bring in the final two runs.
Lake Erie added one more run in the bottom of the sixth. Moldenhauer began the inning with a single, his third hit of the night, and Kevin Berard brought him home two batters later on a run scoring double to the gap in right-center.
Alex Kaminsky (5-5) scored the victory for Lake Erie. He allowed a trio of runs on seven hits over six innings of work and fanned three in the process. Brandon Smith (1) tossed three scoreless innings of two hit relief to grab the save. Zach Fleshman (1-1) took the loss, after allowing four runs, three earned on seven hits over 3.2 innings of work.
All nine in the starting lineup reached safely at least once for the Crushers, while eight out of the starting nine hit safely at least once. Five Crushers registered multiple hits on the night. Bowman and Moldenhauer tallied three hits apiece, while Hertler, Davis and Berard turned in two hits each. Davis knocked in four runs on the night.
The Crushers will continue their three game series against the Washington Wild Things at All Pro Freight Stadium on Thursday night. The Crushers will start lefty Dave Middendorf (8-5, 2.77) and the Wild Things will counter with right hander Shawn Blackwell (3-5, 4.77). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
