(Florence, KY) -The Florence Freedom (19-23) dug themselves an early hole and could not recover in a 6-4 loss to the Washington Wild Things (28-16) Saturday night at UC Health Stadium.

Florence actually got on the board first with three straight hits off Washington starter Zac Fuesser (4-1) in the first inning. Cole Miles started the frame with an infield single and Zak Blair followed with a single of his own. Sam Eberle ripped a single up the middle to drive in Miles but Blair tripped rounding second and was thrown out for the first out of the inning.

Florence did not score again until the ninth as the Wild Things took command of the game in the third inning. Freedom starter Casey Henn (3-3) hit Daniel Poma with a pitch to start the frame. Poma stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Meanwhile Henn walked Scott Kalamar. One out later a passed ball scored Poma and Stewart Ijames lined a single to left to drive in Kalamar putting Washington ahead 2-1. A Ben Kline throwing error allowed another run to score for the Wild Things.

Their 3-1 lead would increase in the sixth thanks to more poor Freedom defense. Connor Lewis drew a walk to start the inning and Max Garrett reached on a fielder's choice. Two errors on the play by Michael Wilson put runners at second and third with nobody out. One out later a sacrifice fly scored Lewis to make it 4-1 in favor of the Wild Things.

Henn gave up four runs over six innings but only one of the runs was earned. He struck out eight while only allowing three hits and walking four.

Washington got big insurance runs in the seventh and ninth because the Freedom rallied in the bottom of the ninth.

Ben Kline got the rally started with a double. Pinch hitter Adam Taylor followed with a double of his own and Kline advanced to third. Miles drove in Kline with a sacrifice fly and Blair tallied his third hit of the game with a ground-rule double to drive in Taylor. Blair later scored on a passed ball. But Jonathan Kountis would be able to get out of the inning as he retired Eberle and Joe Staley to end the game.

The Freedom will look to win the series Sunday evening as they send Peter Gehle (2-2, 3.08 ERA) to the mound. First pitch is at 5:05 p.m.
