Rascals Defeat Grizzlies in Series Finale

SAUGET, Ill. - The River City Rascals edged the Gateway Grizzlies 3-1 Saturday night at GCS Ballpark to salvage a split in the two-game series.

A crowd of 5,446 saw the Grizzlies (31-15) fall for just the second time in their last 12 games. That crowd gave the Grizzlies 18,409 combined fans from July 3-5 for the holiday.

River City (27-17) picked up a run in the third inning on a Josh Ludy sacrifice fly and another run in the fifth inning on a Ludy solo home run to right field.

River City added their final run in the sixth inning against Gateway starting pitcher Kerry Kelley on a successful squeeze bunt from Evan Crawford to make it 3-0.

Kelley (2-1) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits in six innings. The rookie left-hander struck out four and walked two.

Gateway didn't pick up a hit in the game until the eighth inning when Michael Johnson recorded a one-out triple. Johnson came in to score on a Niko Vasquez sacrifice fly.

The Grizzlies will enjoy two off days before returning to action Tuesday night at Rockford. Right-hander Tucker Jensen (5-1) will make the start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 7:05 from Aviators Stadium Tuesday night.
