Otters Hit Three Home Runs in 5-4 Loss at Joliet

(JOLIET, ILLINOIS) - The Evansville Otters (25-17) hit three home runs on Saturday night in a 5-4 loss at the Joliet Slammers.

The three home runs ties a season high for the Otters who will now seek a series win on Sunday at Silver Cross Field.

Left-hander Zach Fowler made his season debut for the Otters on the mound and fell behind 1-0 on a first inning RBI single from Joliet's Adam Giacalone.

Evansville rebounded to take the lead in the fourth inning. Facing pitcher Kody McFarland, Otters first baseman Jeremy Nowak worked a walk and scored on a two-run home run by Chris Elder to right field. It was Elder's second home run of the season and second in as many nights.

Down 2-1, Joliet rallied to then score three times I the fourth. Catcher Tyler Roberts ripped a double to right field and designated hitter Russell Moldenhauer followed with a two-run single later in the inning.

Losing by two runs, Evansville got their second home run of the night from outfielder John Schultz who also hit a homer to right field. The blast was the fourth of the season for Schultz who brought the Otters within a run.

However, Roberts would strike again for Joliet in the sixth. Facing reliever Evan Mott, Roberts hit a ground ball to first baseman that scored runner Danny Hernandez from third. The run would prove to be crucial as Joliet led 5-3 into the ninth when fomer Slammer and current Otters catcher Kolin Conner homered to left field. That brought the deficit back down to a run. Closer Jordan Wellander would then strike out pinch hitter Chris Sweeney and induce Schultz to ground out to end the game.

Outfielder J.R. Higley finished the night 1-for-3 and is now on a seven game hitting streak.

The series is now split one game apiece heading into the series finale on Sunday afternoon. Evansville will have the left-hander and Rockport native Blake Monar (0-0, 162.00 ERA) on the mound against Joliet lefty Blair Walters (1-3, 2.51). First pitch will be 1:05 pm CDT at Silver Cross Field in Joliet, Illinois. Fans not attending the game can listen live to the contest on WUEV 91.5 FM. Play by play announcer Mike Radomski will have the call beginning at 5:45 pm CDT.
