Joliet Slammers News Release
The Joliet Slammers-Presented by ATI Physical Therapy-defeated the Evansville Otters 5-4 on Saturday night at Silver Cross Field.
Joliet struck for a run in the bottom of the 1st inning. Max Casper led off with a walk. Chris Epps followed with a single off new Otters pitcher Zach Fowler, who signed just before the ballgame. With two outs, Adam Giacalone singled in Casper to make it 1-0 Slammers. Kody McFarland started for Joliet and had allowed just one hit into the 4th inning. After walk to Jeremy Nowak in the 4th for Evansville, Chris Elder launched a two-run homer to give the Otters a 2-1 lead. The Slammers regained the lead in the bottom of the 4th. Jose Garcia singled and scored on a RBI double from Tyler Roberts to make it a 2-2 game. Casper walked again and they both scored on a two-out 2-run single from Russell Moldenhauer to give Joliet a 4-2 lead. John Schultz hit a solo home run for Evansville in the top of the 5th to trim the lead to 4-3.
Joliet made it a 2-run lead again in the 6th as Danny Hernandez led off with a double. He moved to 3rd base on a bunt from Seth Granger and scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Tyler Roberts. The Slammers bullpen did a nice job in relief of McFarland, who went the first 5 innings to earn the win. He allowed three runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Sam Moore went two shutout innings followed by Harry Marino's one shutout frame. Jordan Wellander came on to pitch the 9th and allowed a solo homer to Kolin Connor to make the score 5-4 but escaped without any further damage to earn his 5th save on the year.
