Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers used a five-run fourth inning and a complete game from starting pitcher Zac Treece, to take the second game of the series against the Frontier Greys with an 8-1 victory on Saturday night at All Pro Freight Stadium.

The Crushers (23-21) have now won three of their last four games, while the loss for the Greys (11-33) was their eighth in their last 10 games. In addition, the Lake Erie offense has scored 32 runs on 42 hits over their last four games.

Treece (2-1) was outstanding, fanning 10 batters in the complete game victory. It was the second complete game of the season for the Crushers, but the first full nine inning complete game. Todd Kibby tossed a seven inning complete game in the second half of a double header against Traverse City in June.

There was no scoring through the first two innings of the contest, until the Crushers used a little two-out thunder to snap a scoreless tie. Ryan Hutchison started the inning with a single, and advanced to third when Craig Hertler reached on Grey's first baseman Joe Rapp's two-out error. On the very next pitch, Emmanuel Quiles stroked a two-run double down the left field line to give the Crushers the lead.

Lake Erie then sent all nine to the plate and scored five times on five hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to pull away. With Anderson Hidalgo on first and one out, manager Chris Mongiardo called for a hit and run, and Joey Burney singled into right field. The ball was bobbled by right fielder Jon Minucci, and the error allowed Hidalgo to score.

Burney's single was the first of four consecutive hits. Ryan Hutchison followed Burney's single with a RBI triple to right, and he scored on Juan Sanchez's single through the left side with the infield drawn in. Zach Bricknell followed with a base hit, and with two outs, Quiles struck again with a two-run single to left center.

The Crushers added one final run in the bottom of the fifth when Vince Mejia belted a solo homer, his sixth of the season, and his second in as many days.

Treece came away with the victory, and was one out away from a complete game shutout when Chris Ellison hit a solo homer with two down in the ninth. Treece allowed just the run on four hits while fanning 10. Oliver Van Zant (0-1) took the loss after allowing eight runs, four earned on eight hits over five innings.

On a night where every Crusher reached safely at least once, Quiles led the way going 2-for-5 with four RBIs, driving in all four runs with two outs, and he's now hit safely in five consecutive games. Hutchison went 2-for-4 and has hit safely multiple times in six of his last seven games. Bricknell also went 2-for-4, and Sanchez went 1-for-4, extending his on base streak to eight games.

The Crushers will finish their three-game series with the Frontier Greys at All Pro Freight Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Righty Mickey Jannis (2-3, 4.69) will throw for the Crushers. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM.
