Washington Wild Things News Release

Florence, KY - Washington hitter Scott Kalamar smashed his second professional career home run and Jarod Jamerson collected his first professional RBI as the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, won a pivotal game 6-4 in Florence on Saturday night.

Zac Fuesser, who threw 86 strikes in the victory, captured his fourth win on the season as the southpaw tossed five and a third striking out five Freedom hitters. Florence righty Casey Henn was tagged with the loss.

The action started in the first when Florence infielder Sam Eberle knocked in the first run of Saturday's contest with an RBI single. After the early start for the home squad, their lack of fundamental play allowed Washington to take advantage and pull ahead quickly.

In the top of the third, Wild Things outfielder Danny Poma was hit by a pitch and was able to give Washington their first run on a pair of passed balls courtesy of Florence. Outfielder Stewart Ijames chipped in with an RBI single making it 2-1 Washington. A Florence throwing error allowed Ijames to advance and a groundball courtesy of Carter Bell gave the Wild Things an early 4-1 lead.

The Wild Things were able to strike once again in the sixth when a few Florence mistakes allowed for infielder Jarod Jamerson to knock a sacrifice fly making it 4-1. Scott Kalamar was able to provide one more opportunity with a double and a stolen base allowing for outfielder CJ Beatty to hit a sacrifice fly giving the Things one more run. Scott Kalamar continued his solid day when he knocked a solo shot in the eighth to make it 6-1 in favor of Washington.

The Freedom had a late game run in the bottom of the ninth when they knocked in three more runs with a pair of doubles coming from outfielder Cole Miles and infielder Zach Blair. Blair was also able to score on a passed ball, but Florence was unable to maintain their late game momentum as Kountis recorded the last out.

The Wild Things play game three of their series tomorrow at 6:05 on Florence's home turf and will look to take the series. Washington returns home Wednesday, July 9th with a double header against the Lake Erie Crushers.
