FLORENCE, KY - Preston Vancil got all the run support he needed in his first start as a professional as the Florence Freedom downed the Evansville Otters 14-3 Tuesday afternoon at Champion Window Field.
Johnny Welch and Tim Grogan hit a pair of home runs each to carry the Freedom offensively. Grogan's first homer capped off a four run first as the Freedom raced out to a 4-0 lead.
The Freedom pitching staff's 23 consecutive scoreless inning streak came to an end after the Otters scored an unearned run in the top of the third to make it 4-1.
Welch lifted off for his first homer to begin the bottom of the third inning, putting the Freedom back on top by four at 5-1.
That was the end of the road for Evansville starter Jordan Tiegs (0-2) as he allowed five runs in three innings in the loss.
Two innings later Welch was at it again as this time he homered with a man aboard to make it 7-1. It was his fifth homer in the month of July and number 11 on the season.
Florence had their biggest inning in the sixth. Ryan Basham singled home the first run as he finished 2-3 with two RBIs. Billy Mottram singled home his second RBI two batters later to make it 9-1. Erold Andrus followed right along with an RBI single as he also had two hits and went 2-4. Grogan then put the exclamation mark on the inning with a three-run homer the opposite way to make it 13-1.
Grogan finished 2-4 and drove in a career best six RBI. He now has hit seven homers on the season. Grogan's final RBI came in the eighth by driving in Armando Gil with a sacrifice fly to make it 14-1.
Todd Schlenkerman made his professional debut out of the pen for the Freedom. He spelled Vancil (1-0) after the right-hander went seven strong innings, fanning five and allowing just the unearned run.
The Otters put up the game's final two runs on Tyler Diamond's homer in the ninth.
Florence (26-26) has now won three straight games and goes for the sweep of the Otters (16-36) Wednesday night at Champion Window Field. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call the Freedom at (859) 594-HITS or visit FlorenceFreedom.com.
