Bolts Fall Late
July 21, 2009 - Frontier League (FL)
Windy City ThunderBolts News Release
The Kalamazoo Kings used big third inning to take an early lead and then put the game away late as the Kings defeated the Windy City ThunderBolts 9-4.
Windy City manufactured a run in the top of the first inning as with one out Gilberto Mejia singled followed by a hit by Guillermo Martinez. The pair then executed a double steal. J. T. Restko came up and drove home Mejia with a sac fly for a 1-0 ThunderBolts advantage.
Kalamazoo would tie and take the lead in the third as they exploded for five runs, keyed by a bases loaded triple from Amos Ramon to go up 5-1. The Bolts wasted no time in cutting into the Kings lead as with two on and two out, Damian Walcott delivered a triple, just staying inside the first base line bringing home both runners and pulling it to a 5-3 game. Wilson Matos brought Windy City closer in the sixth with a solo homer to slice the Kings lead to a single run.
The ThunderBolts had a chance in the top of the eighth when J. T. Restko led off with a single. Tyler Farrar came in to pinch-run, stole second and moved to third on an error by the catcher. Standing at third as the tying run, Farrar would be stranded there as Dan Baerlocher bore down and struck out the next two batters before getting Wilson Matos to fly out to left to end the inning.
The Kings wasted no time in attacking in the bottom of the inning, plating four runs creating the final margin of victory.
Ben Rue (2-1) picked up the win going five innings allowing three runs. Brandon Garner (2-2) took the loss for the Bolts.
In the series finale, Dylan Axelrod (2-1, 3.07) will make the start for the ThunderBolts against Carson Bryant (0-1, 0.00) for the Kings. Windy City returns home on Thursday for a Bud Light Thirsty Thursday with 12 oz domestic draft beers for just $1.
