BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - More than 130 hockey players geared up in bright pink and took the ice for 41 straight hours last weekend as a part of the Condors Fighting Cancer Hockey-Thon. This year's event raised just over $56,700 for Links for Life, a local breast cancer resource center, and the Condors have now helped raise more than $162,000 during the four- year existence of the Hockey-Thon.

Organized by former Condors player Kevin Barrett, this year's Hockey-Thon was expanded to a 41-hour event, beginning Feb. 22 at 11:59 p.m. and concluding on Feb. 24. New to this year's Hockey-Thon was an Alumni Game of former Condors pitted against former Fresno Falcons, in which the Condors alumni emerged victorious 13-8. The pink and black game- worn jerseys from the alumni game were auctioned off, raising $13,660. The highest jersey bid came for Paul Rosebush's #17 jersey, at $2,200.

"It was a great event with an amazing turnout," said Links For Life Manager Susan Escalante. "The people that came out and contributed were irreplaceable, and it is always great to be partnered with the Condors. A special thanks to Kevin Barrett and his staff and of course the participants. We couldn't do it without them."

Hockey-Thon players raised a minimum of $200 dollars each, contributing more than half of the $56,000 total. Participant Tigger McAllister had no problem reaching the minimum amount, as he brought in the highest amount, at $3,440. The Links for Life raffle table, set up on the concourse during the Condors game on Feb. 24, was able to raise an additional $9,000. The top prize was a signed Wayne Gretzky jersey that fetched a price of $1,600.

"The hockey community has embraced this event, and I am proud of how it has grown each year," said Barrett. "I am proud of all the players who stay up all night and play for the cause as well as the Alumni players who are always willing to help. I hope our efforts have raised awareness for breast cancer as well as provide funds for Links for Life."
