Alaska Aces News Release
PHOENIX - Kimbi Daniels reached the 20-goal milestone for the first time in five years, scoring twice as Alaska coasted to its eighth consecutive victory, 6-3 over Phoenix in front of 2,835 Thursday at US Airways Center.
After a scoreless first period, the Aces used their power play to take control of the game, as Peter Metcalf ripped a one-timer past Roadrunners start Cody Rudkowsky just 37 seconds into the second frame with Alaska on a five-on-three. Still with the man advantage, Josh Soares found a streaking Matt Shasby off the rush for a 2-0 Aces lead at 2:22, Shasby's first goal since January 9 and his sixth of the season.
Sean O'Connor put Phoenix on the board by rifling a wrist shot off the post behind Alaska starter Mike Brown, who looked back just in time to see the puck carom off his pads and into the net at 10:43. Vladimir Novak needed just 43 seconds to restore Alaska's lead to two goals, beating Rudkowsky on a breakaway. Daniels one-timed a wrist shot that ticked off Rudkowsky's glove and into the back of the net with 6:48 left in a suddenly wide open second period after being set up in point blank range set up by Brett Hemingway from behind the net. O'Connor's second goal of the period (and 13th in 21 games against Alaska) brought the Roadrunners within 4-2 heading to the third period.
F.P. Guenette set up a pair of goals early in the final frame to put the contest out of reach, finding Daniels for his 20th of the year at 1:15 and setting Michael Lambert loose on a breakaway that the latter converted with a backhander top shelf to push the Aces margin to 6-2. Peder Skinner beat Brown with a drive from the left circle at 8:27, but Alaska never was seriously threatened in coasting to victory behind 37 saves from its goaltender.
The Aces have moved into a tie for third place in the West Division and fifth in the National Conference at a season-best 10 games over .500 (29-19-5) heading into tomorrow's rematch with Phoenix at 5:11 p.m. AT. The Roadrunners remain winless in their last seven games (0-6-1) and have just one victory in their last nine at home. Sunday's series finale will begin at 11:00 a.m. AT. All regular season games are broadcast live on AM 750 KFQD, with coverage beginning 15 minutes prior to face-off.
