Rochester Americans News Release

(Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Americans scored four straight goals, including three in the second period, to cruise to a 4-3 road victory tonight over the Lake Erie Monsters at Quicken Loans Arena. With the win, Rochester snaps its two-game skid and returns to a .500 mark at 17-17-2-2 overall, good enough for a fourth place standing in the American Hockey League's North Division.

Michal Repik and Clay Wilson each scored and goal and assisted on another to earn second and third star honors, respectively, while rookie netminder Jacob Markstrom stopped 27 shots for his 12th win of the season.

Justin Mercier, Ryan Stoa and Travis Gawryletz each contributed single tallies for the hometown Monsters in front of veteran goaltender John Grahame's 22-save losing effort.

The Monsters and Amerks exchanged first period goals, starting with Mercier's fifth of the season midway at 12:03 of the frame. Wilson leveled the contest at 1-1 over two minutes later, sending the teams to the locker room in a one-goal deadlock through the first 20 minutes of play. Both tallies would be unassisted, with Wilson's serving as the first of four straight for the Amerks.

It would be all Rochester in the second stanza as it accounted for three consecutive goals in span of 5:13, beginning with back-to-back markers just 23 seconds apart from Repik and Scott Timmins that put the Amerks on top 3-1. Jordan Knackstedt provided a three-goal cushion at 15:14 with his ninth goal of the season, ultimately proving to be the game-winner.

Lake Erie climbed back within one before the final frame was even 90 seconds old with consecutive power-play goals just seven seconds apart. AJ Jenks took a delay of game penalty in the closing seconds of the second period just before Mike Kostka was found guilty of a slashing infraction 30 seconds into the third. Gawryletz capitalized on the ensuing five-on-three advantage at 1:12 and Stoa would find the back of the net moments later off the face-off at 1:19 to quickly make it a 4-3 game.

Despite the two quick tallies, the Monsters could not complete the comeback as Markstrom finished the final period with seven saves to preserve the one-goal lead for his team.

The Amerks remain on the road as they head to the southern tier on Saturday, January 8th to meet the Binghamton Senators in a non-divisional matchup at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The 7:00 p.m. contest will be the fifth of eight meetings this season between the intrastate rivals and will be carried live on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and FM 107.3, Rochester's Sports Talk.
