Pirates Recap

During the holiday week, the Pirates returned to the ice after a 10-day layoff with four games in six days. As the Atlantic Division race has heated up, the four contests during the past week proved vital for divisional placement.

On Tuesday, December 28th the Pirates welcomed the Providence Bruins to the Civic Center for the fourth of 12 meetings this season. A potent power-play was on display for Portland as they tied a season-high with three goals on the man advantage enroute to a 4-3 victory, improving their season record over Providence to 3-0-1-0. Pirates goals were scored by Mark Mancari, Paul Byron, Dennis McCauley, and Colin Stuart.

The following night, the Pirates travelled to Hartford, CT to take on the Connecticut Whale (formerly the Hartford Wolf Pack) in the season debut between the two teams. After two scoreless periods, the Whale jumped up 1-0 early in third followed by Paul Byron tying the game to send it into overtime. In the extra period, ex-Pirate Tim Kennedy sent his former team home with only one point, beating Jhonas Enroth only 36 seconds into the period.

New Years Eve would have an eerily similar final result as the Whale headed north to Portland for game two in three days. In an intense, back-and-forth affair, the teams would again head to overtime this time tied at four. Once again, Kennedy one-upped the Pirates, this time only 24 seconds into the extra period. Mark Mancari, Paul Byron, Justin Bowers, and Colin Stuart each scored goals for Portland.

A dissapointing week would cap off with a trip down to Worcester, for game four of the UNUM Challenge. The Sharks jumped out to a 2-0 lead through two periods, but the Pirates would viciously fight back in the final period. With goals by Corey Tropp and Derek Whitmore, Portland seemed prime to at least end the week with at least a point from each game. However, a power-play goal by Worcester's Matt Irwin with only 3.3 seconds left in the game sent the Pirates home empty.

Portland currently stands at 18-11-4-1 with 41 points, which puts them in third-place in the Atlantic Division (nine points behind the first-place Manchester Monarchs).
