Four-Run First Doesn't Stand Up

Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Crooked numbers early in games continue to be the nemesis of the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
The Goldeyes let a four-run lead slip away and lost 9-6 to the Sioux City Explorers Tuesday night at Shaw Park before a crowd of 6,422.
The loss, in which the Goldeyes gave up a crooked number of four or more runs for the third consecutive game, drops Winnipeg to 15-21 on the season.
Everything was in Winnipeg's favour after four-run first inning in which Casey Haerther had an RBI single, Josh Mazzola drove in two runs with a triple and Mazzola scored on a Brad Boyer single.
The Explorers fought back with singles in the top of the second and third to cut the Goldeyes lead in half, before taking the lead with five runs in the fourth inning. Goldeyes reliever Mark Pope was on the hook for the five runs, but only three were earned, as shortstop Mazzola committed a costly error on a play that could have led to an inning-ending double play without any runs being scored.
Designated hitter Ryan Babineau drove in a run for the Goldeyes in the bottom of the sixth and Jon Weber came through with a RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to cut Sioux City's lead down to just a run. But, that's as close as the comeback would get.
The Explorers scored a run in the eighth and added another in the ninth on a Tommy Mendonca solo home run.
Haerther, Mazzola, Boyer and Babineau all had two-hit nights for the Goldeyes.
Goldeyes starting pitcher Coby Cowgill left the game with a leg injury in the top of the third inning. He gave up two runs in 2 2/3 innings of work.
Pope suffered the loss for the Goldeyes, while Sioux City starter Eric Wordekemper picked up the win and closer Jose Flores earned his 10th save of the season.
The third game of the four-game series goes Wednesday afternoon at Shaw Park with a special 4:00 p.m. Canada Day start time. Lefty Kyle Anderson (1-1, 4.43) is expected to come off the disabled list to make the start for the Goldeyes. He'll face Sioux City's Ryan Zimmerman (5-1, 2.30).
Tickets for all Goldeyes home games in 2015 are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
