Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD-The Sioux Falls Canaries (18-21) did it again on Wednesday evening as Harrison Kain hit a sacrifice fly into left field that scored RJ Perucki as the Birds' took the series finale from the Wichita Wingnuts (20-18) by a final of 4-3 at Sioux Falls Stadium.
Sioux Falls got off to a hot start in the bottom of the first when Jerome Pena scorched a double into center field on a twelve pitch at bat. Brian Humphries stepped to the plate next and drove in Pena on a RBI single to put the Birds' ahead by a run.
Wichita answered next in the top of the fourth as Joash Brodin stepped into the batter's box and hit an RBI double to tie the game at one apiece. The Wingnuts got two more runs in the top of the fifth on a Leo Vargas single that scored Tyler Coughenour who reached on a one out triple. TJ Mittelstaedt also doubled in the top of the fifth inning that brought around Vargas to put Wichita ahead by two runs.
The runs went silent until the bottom of the ninth inning when David Bergin smoked a leadoff double. After two wild pitches Bergin scored from third to bring the Birds' within a run. Richard Stock dug into the batter's box next and ultimately reached on a walk that would give way to an RJ Perucki single. Canaries' rookie Vickash Ramjit was able to lay down a bunt to move Perucki to second base. Tyler Shover was due up for Sioux Falls, but Wichita intentionally walked the starting catcher to load the bases for Harrison Kain. On the fifth pitch of the at bat, Kain drove a deep fly ball into left field, and Perucki was able to tag up at third base and score the winning run for Sioux Falls. The Birds' starting left fielder Brian Humphries also picked up two hits in the final game of the series.
Sioux Falls starting pitcher Shawn Blackwell (1-5, 3.60 ERA) recorded the no decision as he tossed 6 2/3 innings on seven hit ball and gave up two earned runs. The win went to Canaries relief pitcher Cameron McVey (2-1, 1.86 ERA) as he tossed 1 1/3 shutout innings.
The Wichita bullpen was unable to close out the game as they used four pitchers in relief. Wingnuts starter Tim Brown (3-1, 3.25 ERA) threw six innings while giving up four hits and one earned run to record the no decision. The loss was tagged to relief pitcher Daniel Bennett (0-4, 2.70 ERA) as he gave up the winning run on 1/3 inning of work.
Sioux Falls has a much needed off day on Thursday before hitting the road to face their I-29 rival, the Sioux City Explorers for a three game series beginning on Friday evening.
