Wichita Wingnuts News Release

SIOUX FALLS, SD (July 1, 2015) - The Wichita Wingnuts took a lead into the bottom of the ninth inning in all three games they played in Sioux Falls this week. Unfortunately, they were only able to hang on to that lead once. For the second time in three nights, Sioux Falls came from behind in the last inning to win in walk-off fashion on Wednesday night at "The Birdcage". Harrison Kain's sacrifice fly with the bases loaded pushed the Canaries to a 4-3 win.

Sioux Falls (18-21) jumped on the Wingnuts and starter Tim Brown right away. In the bottom of the first Jerome Pena ripped a one out double to advance into scoring position. Brian Humphries followed with a single to left field that scored Pena and put the Canaries in front 1-0.

The Wingnuts (20-18) tied the game in the fourth and took the lead in the fifth. After a leadoff walk and back-to-back fielder's choice groundouts, Matt Padgett was standing on first with Josh Brodin coming to the plate. The center fielder crushed a double to the right center power alley that scored Padgett to even the score. In the next frame Tyler Coughenour raced around the bases for a triple with one out. Leo Vargas then chopped a ground ball over the head of the first baseman and into right field for his first RBI of the season and a 2-1 lead. Vargas would later score on T.J. Mittelstaedt's double to extend the advantage to 3-1.

Tim Brown never allowed a run the rest of the way as he worked 6.0 innings and gave up just four hits. Frankie Reed and Al Yevoli combined to shut out the Canaries over the next two innings to send the game to the ninth.

Daniel Carela came on with an opportunity to record his second straight save. He went to a full count against Bergin, who eventually won the battle with a double to deep right field. Bergin scored on two wild pitches to pull the Canaries within a run. The right-hander then walked Richard Stock to put the tying run on base and prompt Kevin Hooper to call on Daniel Bennett (0-4).

R.J. Perucki tried to advance the runner with a sacrifice bunt, but the bunt was so good there was no play available and two runners were aboard. Vickash Ramjit also laid down a bunt and while Bennett picked it up he slipped and could not make the play. With the bases loaded, a wild pitch scored a run to make it 3-3. The Wingntus intentionally walked Tyler Shover to load the bases before Kain won the game.

Wichita will take Thursday off before returning to action on Friday night in Amarillo at 7:05 p.m. For information on season tickets, group outings, and party packages, call the Wingnuts' main office at (316) 264-NUTS, or visit the Wingnuts' official website at www.wichitawingnuts.com.
