Four-Run 7th Inning Helps Thunder Defeat New Britain 7-4

(New Britain, CT)- The Thunder score the go-ahead four runs in the 7th inning, including six hits in a row, to go on for a 7-4 win over New Britain on Thursday afternoon at New Britain Stadium.

With the score tied at 3-3 and one out in the 7th inning, CF Austin Jackson doubled off of New Britain reliever Jay Sawatski (0-2). He then moved to third base on a wild pitch. He scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single by RF Jose Tabata. After LF Colin Curtis singled Tabata to second, DH Matt Carson delivered a two-run double to increase the lead to 6-3. 1B Cody Ehlers completed the scoring with an RBI single to make it 7-3.

New Britain (6-6) closed to 7-4 in the 8th inning with an RBI single by RF David Winfree off of Thunder reliever Steven Jackson. But that is as close as New Britain would get. RHP Eric Wordekemper tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his first save of the season. Thunder starting pitcher Jason Jones (3-0) went 6 IP and gave up 9 H and 3 ER to earn his third straight win. He struck out four and walked three. New Britain starting pitcher Jay Rainville went 5 IP and gave up 7 H and 3 ER and received a no-decision.

The Rock Cats took a 3-0 lead on Jones in the 1st inning on a three-run home run by 1B Brock Peterson. Trenton tied the game in the 2nd inning with three runs highlighted by an RBI double by 3B Marcos Vechionacci. Ehlers had three hits for the Thunder as five Thunder hitters had multiple hits.

The Thunder will play the second game of the four-game series on Friday night at 6:35 p.m. at New Britain Stadium. LHP Chase Wright (2-1, 3.12) will start for the Thunder against New Britain RHP Oswaldo Sosa (0-1, 4.32).
