New Britain, CT - The Trenton Thunder scored four runs in the 7th inning to defeat the New Britain Rock Cats, 7-4, in front of a sun-splashed School Vacation Week crowd of 5,148 this afternoon at New Britain Stadium. The 12 Noon game was the first of a four-game weekend series between Trenton, the New York Yankees Eastern League affiliate, and the host Rock Cats.

Trenton improved their record to 8-7 while the Rock Cats dropped to 6-6.

New Britain got on the board first when Rock Cats' 1B Brock Peterson blasted a 3-Run homerun far over the fence in right centerfield. The runs were the first surrendered in the young season by Trenton's starter and winner, Jason Jones. The right-hander allowed a total of 9 hits but just 3 runs over 6 full innings and improved his record to 3-0.

Trenton countered in the 2nd inning when they tied the score with 3 hits off New Britain starter Jay Rainville, a Rhode Island native who went 5 innings and ended the afternoon with a no decision. The Rock Cats bullpen faltered in the 7th inning when southpaw Jay Sawatski was reached for 4 runs on 6 of the Thunder's total of 14 hits on the day. The lefty was charged with all 4 runs and absorbed his second loss of the year.

1B Cody Ehlers banged out 3 hits for Trenton; four other Trenton players had 2 safeties apiece. Trenton reliever Eric Wordekemper tossed a perfect 9th inning to record his first Eastern League Save.

New Britain collected 11 hits on the afternoon with three players - 3B Luke Hughes, DH Erik Lis, and 2B Jose Molina - recording 2 each. Peterson's 3 RBI increased his team-leading total to 13.

The two teams will play again tomorrow night at 6:35 PM at New Britain Stadium.
