Atlanta Gladiators News Release

The Gwinnett Gladiators announced today that forward Michael Forney has been promoted to the team's American Hockey League affiliate Chicago Wolves. This is Forney's first trip to the AHL after signing a multiple-year contract with the Atlanta Thrashers in July of last year. In 47 games with the Gladiators this season, the 21-year-old has recorded seven goals and nine assists for 16 points.

Forney recorded 60 points in 59 junior games last season with the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League. He led the team in all offensive categories (goals, assists, points) and ranked ninth in the league in overall scoring. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound left wing was also tied for fourth in the USHL in power play goals (12).

A native of Thief River Falls, Minn, Forney appeared in 19 games over two seasons with the University of North Dakota from 2006-07 to 2007-08, recording two assists. He was drafted by the Thrashers in the third round with the 80th overall pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

In a related move, the Gladiators have again signed defenseman Roman Marakhovski. The 12-year pro out of Ukraine appeared in the last seven games with the Gladiators before being released by the team earlier this week. Prior to the Gladiators, the 31-year-old most recently spent two seasons with Georgia's Columbus Cottonmouths of the Southern Professional Hockey League.

The Gladiators continue their 7th season in the ECHL on Friday, February 19th @ South Carolina at 7:05 p.m. The Gladiators are the AA affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers and Columbus Blue Jackets and play all home games at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
