Elmira Jackals News Release

The Elmira Jackals used a six-goal second period to blow their game open against the Reading Royals on Friday night at First Arena in Elmira N.Y., eventually prevailing 8-3. Jarrett Konkle had a hat trick, an assist, and a +5, with his three goals coming in the middle-session outburst.

The Jackals went into the game leading the Royals by five points for the top spot in the American East Division, and their hopes to increase that lead looked good from the start, when Tyler Donati backhanded in a rebound off his own shot to give the Jackals the 1-0 advantage. Olivier Proulx and Bear Trapp had assists on the goal.

After Ryan Cruthers tied the game with a shot at 8:14 of the first period, Mat Robinson's slap shot from the high slot gave the Jackals the lead for good at 17:18 of the first period, with assists going to Konkle and Yannick Tifu.

The Jackals did the majority of their work in the second period, and it started when Chris Korchinski knocked in a rebound off of a Michael Busto shot to make it 3-1 in favor of the Jackals at 6:48.

Yannick Tifu converted at 8:23 of the second period, when he received a long feed ahead and skated in alone on Royals goaltender Matt Dalton, beating him high stick side to give the Jackals a 4-1 cushion.

At 10:20, Konkle scored the first of his three goals, redirecting an R.J. Anderson shot past Dalton for the 5-1 lead. His second goal came at 16:38, with a snap shot from the right circle that snuck over Dalton's right shoulder to make it 6-1, and he finished the hat trick by poking in a loose puck past backup goaltender Shane Davis at 19:03, making it 8-1.

Moments before that, Tyler Donati's shot from the right circle beat David glove side to give the Jackals the 7-1 lead.

In the third period, the Royals added two goals, one from Yannick Riendeau and the other from Olivier Labelle, but the Jackals won the game 8-3.

In net for the Jackals, Andy Chiodo made 28 saves on 31 shots to improve to 3-0 with Elmira. Dalton fell to 16-17-0-2 for Reading this season, making 26 saves on 32 shots, and came back in the third period to spell Davis, who made four saves on six shots in his first ever ECHL action.

Elmira upped its record to 28-18-3-2 with the victory, while Reading's record dropped to 25-22-1-3 in 2009-2010.

The Jackals host the Royals on Saturday night at First Arena at 7:35 p.m. as the Jackals try to increase their American East Division lead to nine points. For tickets, call (607) 734-PUCK (7825), visit the First Arena Box Office, or click here.
