Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

FARGO, N.D. - The RailCats added a right-handed arm to their pitching staff on Friday with the signing of former Arizona Diamondbacks prospect Billy Spottiswood. To make room for Spottiswood on the 22-man roster, rookie infielder Ryan Miller was placed on irrevocable waivers.

Spottiswood began the season in St. Paul's bullpen and made seven appearances before being released on June 10. He was 0-1 with a 3.24 ERA with eight strikeouts and five walks in 8 2/3 innings. The 28-year-old split the 2012 season between St. Paul and Winnipeg, combining for a 2-5 record and 3.66 ERA in 36 appearances.

The Diamondbacks selected Spottiswood in the 25th round of the 2007 draft and he spent five years in the organization, reaching Triple-A in 2009 and 2010. He has a career ERA of 3.58 and three times in his career finished with an ERA below 3.00.

Miller appeared in four games for Gary and was 1-for-9 with an RBI.

The RailCats begin a three-game series at Fargo on Friday night at 7:02 p.m. The radio broadcast begins at 7:00 on 89.1 FM The Lakeshore and www.railcatsbaseball.com.
