Rainy game finishes in victory

AMARILLO, TX - The Sox improve their winning streak to four as they defeat Sioux Falls, 9-7 at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium. The quick game lasted two hours and thirty-two minutes in which rain fell on two different occasions, but only caused delay once for the 2,446 in attendance.

Jason Johnson started on the mound for the Sox and retired all batters through the first four innings. On offense, the Sox jumped out in front with two runs in the first batted in by a Chris Valencia triple and a Chris Grossman single. After an out in the bottom of the second, the bottom three of the order all singled to load the bases for the Sox. A Jason Martin sacrifice fly, followed by a two-RBI double by Valencia, and another RBI for Grossman made the score 6-0 until the fifth inning.

The Canaries broke their four-inning hitless start to the game with two single in the fifth, which led to a bases loaded walk for Sioux Falls' first run of the game. Amarillo answered back in the bottom of the inning when David Peralta tripled and would score on Joe Weik's groundout to short. Johnson would walk the first batter of the sixth which came around to score on a J.P. Ramirez double, making the score 7-2. Again in the bottom of the inning, the Sox scored a run on two consecutive errors committed by the Canaries' corner infielders. Another run in the seventh led off by Weik's double gave the Sox a 9-2 lead going into the eighth inning.

Sioux Falls scored a run in the eighth off the Sox starter which was sparked by a Nick Van Stratten triple. Matt Larkins came in to pitch the ninth and would allow four runs, one earned on three hits with a walk, two strikeouts, and an error. Erik Draxton came in with the bases loaded, tying run at the plate and two outs to give up a two-run single off the bat of Canary left fielder, J.P. Ramirez. Draxton recorded the final out of the game on a pop out to left the next batter.

Jason Johnson (W, 2-1) pitched eight innings, allowing three runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Kyle Ruwe (L, 3-3) went six and gave up eight runs, seven earned on twelve hits while striking out one and walking none. Jordan Whatcott pitched two innings of relief for the Canaries and allowed one run on one hit. Erik Draxton (S, 3) earns the save for Amarillo, allowing a hit in two batters faced.

With the win, the Sox improve to 14-12, while the Canaries fall to 12-16 on the season. Saturday, the Sox host Sioux Falls for the second of a three game series. The game is set to begin at 7:05pm with the Aqua One Pre-Game Show set to begin at 6:55pm. Game time is tentative and subject to change.
