Fog ends night early, Chinooks fall 9-4

Lakeshore Chinooks News Release

Mequon, Wis. - Trouble out of the gate spelled trouble for the Chinooks who's main offense came from the long ball.

Lakeshore Chinook (12-12) pitchers Blake Malatestinic and Jason Decicco struggled to halt the Fond Du Lac Dock Spider (16-9) offense in Thursday night's loss, accounting for nine earned runs on 15 hits in six combined innings of work.

After starting the game in a 4-0 deficit, Chinook center fielder Collin Mathews blasted a home run over the left field wall, his second in as many days.

The solo shot was not the only ball hit over the fence for Lakeshore as Jackson Gray launched his third home run of the season and third in three games over the right field wall in the bottom of the fifth inning.

These home runs weren't enough to lift their struggling pitchers, who never seemed to find their rhythm Thursday night, allowing the Dock Spiders to continue their hot bats and score several more runs in the middle innings.

After getting through less than one full inning, time was once again called as the fog rolled back into Kapco Park. This time, the fog wasn't leaving.

While both teams waited in their dugouts to hear word on the status of their game, the Chinooks players grew restless and began to play catch with a baseball and football.

Some players practiced throwing with their opposite arms while others showed off their off speed pitches.

Pitcher Joe Glassey suddenly emerged holding a soccer ball and decided to organize a game of kickball.

One at a time, Chinook players took their turns kicking the ball as it was rolled their way.

Many of the players' baseball skills translate directly into the exhibition kickball game.

For example, Northwoods League home run leader Griffin Doersching tried to kick the ball with power, using his massive legs to boom the ball.

Many of the pitchers were able to peg runners as they tried to stretch their hits into extra bases, the PA announcer in the press box made some controversial calls and of course the players' competitive drive remained prevalent, even during a game of kickball.

Though it was a shame the game against the Dock Spiders could not have been completed, the fans that stayed through the second fog delay and witnessed the kickball game were treated to watching the Lakeshore players in their most natural, child-like state. After about 30 minutes, the game was called off and the Chinooks officially lost 9-4.

Lakeshore hopes to get back to their winning ways Friday night. A victory at home is all Gill is asking for at his Mascot Birthday Party, presented by Cedar Crest Ice Cream.

Gill's party is also shared with Fast and Furious Night, presented by Marcus Theatres.
