SERIES AT A GLANCE: The Flying Squirrels will seek to snap a two-game slide when they take on the New Britain Rock Cats in game three of a four-game series at The Diamond tonight. Last night, Chris Colabello went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and he blasted a solo home run - one of three solo shots hit by New Britain - to lead the Rock Cats (38-34) to a 6-1 win over the Flying Squirrels (36-38) in front of 9,077 fans in game two of the series. New Britain's three home runs are the most allowed in a single game by Richmond's pitching staff this season. In addition to Colabello, the Rock Cats got solo shots from Nate Hanson and Aaron Hicks.
Andy Reichard (1-3) allowed four hits and five runs, four of which were earned, in 3.2 innings pitched and was charged with the loss. Luis Perdomo (4-4) earned the win after allowing just one hit and one earned run in five innings of relief for New Britain.
Blake Martin made a spot start for New Britain and he allowed three hits in four scoreless frames for the Rock Cats. The Flying Squirrels went 8-7 against New Britain in 2011 including a 4-4 mark at The Diamond. Richmond is 19-17 all-time against the Rock Cats and the club is 11-8 all-time in the River City. The two teams will meet 14 times in 2012, seven times in New Britain and seven times in Richmond. The Rock Cats claimed the opening series by winning three out of four games between the clubs at New Britain Stadium (4/5-4/7). Richmond won two out three from the Rock Cats at The Diamond (4/27-4/29).
TODAY'S PITCHERS: RHP Craig Westcott vs. LHP Logan Darnell Westcott: Makes his fifteenth start for the Flying Squirrels today. In his last start, Westcott allowed five hits and two runs, one of which was earned along with one walk and three strikeouts in six innings pitched at Trenton Tuesday. He received a no-decision in Richmond's 3-2 setback in 10 innings. Today's game will be Westcott's third career start against the Rock Cats. He is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA against New Britain. After splitting the 2010 season between Advanced-A San Jose and Richmond, Westcott spent the entire 2011 campaign back in San Jose. Westcott enjoyed a banner year in the California League as he posted a 13-4 record with a 3.42 ERA in 25 appearances, including 24 starts. His 13 wins tied for the most in the Cal League and he finished fourth in the circuit in ERA (3.42). As a result, Westcott was named both a Mid-Season and Postseason All-Star. He was also a Mid-Season All-Star in the Cal League in 2010 after going 6-0 with a miniscule 1.83 ERA in 13 starts with San Jose before being promoted to Richmond. Westcott did not enjoy the same level of success with the Flying Squirrels however, as he compiled a 3-3 mark with a 5.13 ERA in the second half of the season. He owns a record of 35-11 with a 3.35 ERA in 79 career minor league appearances, including 71 starts.
The Chalmette, LA native was selected by the Giants in the 30th round of the 2009 June Draft out of Belhaven (MS) College.
Darnell: Makes his fifteenth start of the season for New Britain today. In his last start, Darnell allowed a season-high 10 hits, six runs and four earned runs along with no walks and one strikeout in five innings pitched at Altoona Tuesday. He took the loss in New Britain's 8-1 setback. Today's game will be his fourth career start against the Flying Squirrels. Darnell is 2-1 with a 4.08 ERA against Richmond. He boasts a career record of 18-15 with a 4.07 ERA in 51 appearances, including 45 starts. He was selected by the Twins in the sixth round of the 2010 June Draft out of the University of Kentucky.
HOMER HAPPY: The Flying Squirrels' pitching staff allowed three home runs in last night's 6-1 loss to New Britain, the most home runs it has allowed in a single game this season. Prior to last night's game, Richmond had only allowed multiple home runs in a single game just twice this season (June 8 @ Portland and June 17 vs. Portland). For the season, Richmond has allowed 31 home runs, which is the fewest in the Eastern League. The Akron Aeros rank just behind Richmond with 32 home runs allowed in 2012.
WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU?: Gary Brown was the lone Squirrel batter to fare well at the plate in last night's 6-1 setback to New Britain. Brown went 2-for-4 and drove in Richmond's only run with an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth. It was his seventh consecutive game with a base hit, with multiple hits in five of those seven contests. He has now matched his longest hitting streak of the season. In his last 10 games, Brown is batting .367 (18-for-49) and he currently ranks third in the Eastern League in stolen bases with 21.
ROCK, CHALK...: Richmond reliever Brett Bochy continues to thrive in his first season at the Double-A level. Bochy, a former Kansas Jayhawk, is now 5-2 with a team-high eight saves in 11 chances and a 1.62 ERA after skipping over Advanced-A San Jose.
Bochy worked 18 consecutive scoreless innings to start the season, which spanned his first 11 appearances. Eastern League batters are now hitting a paltry .147 (16-for-109) against Bochy this season.
