Akron RubberDucks News Release
Altoona, PA - The gears of change turn rapidly in the game of baseball. One night after suffering their worst loss of the season, the Akron Aeros came storming back Sunday night with one of their best offensive performances, throttling the Altoona Curve, 15-4, at People's Natural Gas Field.
The Aeros matched a season-high with 19 hits, including six doubles. The 15-run outburst was one short of the team's season high. Just one day ago, the Aeros were lambasted by the Curve, 13-5, the most one-sided defeat inflicted upon the first-place Aeros this season.
On Sunday, Akron jumped on Curve starter Phil Irwin (0-5) with two runs in the first on a RBI single by Chun Chen and a sacrifice fly by Adam Abraham, both of whom were just getting started.
Chen finished 4-5 on the night, with three doubles and three RBI's. He raised his team-high average to .327. Abraham was 3-5, with four RBI's. It was the second straight three-hit game for Abraham, who extended his hitting streak to six games.
The Aeros (47-28) produced enough hits for their own version of 'American Top 40'. After adding two more in the third to make it 4-0, catcher Roberto Perez clubbed a bases-loaded double in the fifth to extend the lead to 7-0.
The dam broke in the sixth when the Aeros scored five more, extending the lead to 12-2. It was the most runs in a game for Akron since they tallied 15 at home against Richmond on May 19th. Just one night earlier, they had scored a season-high 16 runs against the Squirrels.
The offensive outburst was plenty for Aeros starter Paolo Espino (2-2), who won his second straight start. Espino allowed two runs in 6 1/3 innings, walking two and striking out a personal-high eight batters.
The Aeros were a sizzling 9-22 with runners in scoring position. Thomas Neal was 2-3 from the leadoff spot, with three runs scored. Ryan Rohlinger chipped in two RBI's for the victors.
Good news also rolled in from New Hampshire, where the Fisher Cats beat Harrisburg, 5-3, allowing the Aeros to tack another game onto their EL West lead, which now stands at 9 =C21/2 games.
The Aeros and Curve (34-38) will conclude the four-game series on Monday night at 7:00. Game four of the series will feature a pitching matchup of LHP T.J. House (5-2, 3.12) for Akron and RHP Tim Alderson (3-3, 3.38) for the Curve. All Aeros games are broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com.
