Bowie, Md. - Baysox second baseman Jonathan Schoop hit two home runs and recorded four total RBIs Sunday as the Baysox beat the Reading Phillies 9-4. The two teams will play a rubber match for the series Monday evening.
After struggling Saturday, the Baysox offense was on fire Sunday. The team combined for 12 hits and nine runs as they jumped out to an early lead against the R-Phils and never looked back.
"We had some good at-bats," said Manager Gary Kendall. "I would like to know what our numbers are when [Antoan] Richardson gets on to lead off. Along with Jonathan, both of the guys at the top of the order had productive days. We got some big RBIs in that five run first [inning] and I thought we played a really good ball game."
Baltimore Orioles right-handed pitcher Matt Lindstrom, who was in Bowie on a Major League Rehab Assignment, pitched one scoreless inning for the Baysox and allowed one hit while striking out one batter.
The Baysox offense got off to a strong start against Reading starter Austin Hyatt. Center fielder Antoan Richardson hit a lead off single to first base and Schoop followed with a two-run homerun to left field. With one out, designated hitter Robbie Widlansky kept the rally going with a single to center field and he scored when shortstop Manny Machado doubled to center field. First baseman Brandon Waring hit the second home run of the inning when he sent a blast over the left field fence to give the Baysox a 5-0 lead.
"Early in the count I was just thinking about trying to move the runner over, but once there were two strikes I just wanted to put the ball in play," Schoop said. "When I hit my first homer, I didn't think it was out, but then I saw it had carried over the fence."
Reading got two runs back in the top of the second inning against Baysox right-handed starting pitcher Zach Clark. Leandro Castro hit a lead off home run to left field and Jiwan James hit a one out single to left field. Troy Hanzawa singled to right field and James came around to score on the play after a throwing error by right fielder Jai Miller to make the score 5-2.
The Baysox tacked on another run in the bottom of the second inning. Catcher Allan de San Miguel hit a lead off double to left field and he scored after a Richardson single and a fielding error by the right fielder that made the score 6-2.
The R-Phils chipped away at the Baysox lead again in the top of the fourth inning with a two out rally. James hit a two out single to left field and Hanzawa followed with a double to left field that plated James and made the score 6-3.
Bowie extended its lead again in the bottom of the fourth inning against Reading reliever Juan Morillo. Richardson drew a two out walk and Schoop followed with his second two-run homerun of the game to give the Baysox an 8-3 lead.
Reading kept up the pressure with another run in the top of the fifth inning. Cesar Hernandez hit a lead off triple to right field and scored when Darin Ruf hit a one out single to center field to make the score 8-4.
The Baysox added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning against Reading reliever Frank Gailey. Richardson drew a lead off walk, stole second base, moved to third base on a groundout by Schoop and scored on a sacrifice fly by left fielder Buck Britton to extend the lead to 9-4.
Clark pitched five innings and allowed four runs on 10 hits while striking out four batters and walking one in the win. Left-handed reliever Pedro Viola pitched the final three innings of the game and did not allow a hit or a run while striking out five batters for his third save of the season.
"Viola has been above-average and we considered going with someone else in the ninth inning, but he had been throwing the ball well and he felt fine so our bullpen did it for us again," Kendall said.
Hyatt took the loss for the R-Phils, pitching two innings and allowing six runs on eight hits while striking out three batters.
The Baysox are home through Monday, June 25 for a five game home stand that concludes with Mutt Monday starting at 7:05 p.m. The team then departs to Binghamton to begin an eight game road trip Tuesday before returning home Wednesday, July 4.
LHP Jake Pettit (4-1, 4.11) is scheduled to take the mound for the Baysox tomorrow as the team concludes a five game series with the Reading Phillies. He will be opposed by RHP Trevor May (6-4, 4.78).
