Big Inning Dooms Squirrels

Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - Evan Bigley went 3-for-5 and delivered a two-run double in a five-run sixth inning to propel the New Britain Rock Cats (39-34) to a 7-3 win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels (36-39) in game two of a four-game series at The Diamond Sunday afternoon. With the win, New Britain improved to 7-3 against Richmond in 2012.
Richmond seized the early lead with two runs in the bottom of the second. Mark Minicozzi drew a walk from Rock Cats starter Logan Darnell to start the inning. Minicozzi advanced to third on a single by Tommy Joseph. After Joseph was picked off first base by Darnell, Juan Perez smacked a two-run home run - his fifth of the season - over the left field wall to put the Flying Squirrels in front 2-0.
The Rock Cats got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the fifth. After Bigley singled to start the frame, Deibinson Romero lined out to shortstop Juan Ciriaco. But a throwing error from Ryan Cavan enabled Bigley to take third base. Matt Rizzotti followed with a sacrifice fly, which made it a 2-1 contest.
The Flying Squirrels answered with a run in the bottom of the frame. Gary Brown sent Darnell's 1-2 pitch over the left field fence, which extended Richmond's lead to 3-1.
But things fell apart for the Flying Squirrels in the top of the sixth as New Britain posted five runs in the inning on seven hits and one error. Craig Westcott allowed back-to-back singles to start the inning before surrendering an RBI single to Oswaldo Arcia. After Chris Colabello singled to load the bases, Bigley ripped a two-run double that scored Chris Herrmann and Arcia. Additionally, a throwing error by Ciriaco enabled Colabello to score on the play. Following Westcott's exit from the ballgame, New Britain tacked on one more run in the inning on Rizzotti's RBI single, which made it a 6-3 game in favor of the Rock Cats.
New Britain added one more run in the top of the seventh on Colabello's 12th home run of the season and his second in as many nights. Meanwhile, Darnell (6-6) recovered after his shaky start. The southpaw allowed seven hits and three earned runs in six innings of work to earn his sixth win of the season. Daniel Turpen tossed three scoreless frames to pick up his fifth save of the season. Westcott (6-5) took the loss for Richmond after yielding seven hits and six runs, five of which were earned, in five innings pitched.
The Squirrels will seek to end their three-game slide and avoid a series sweep when the two teams meet in the series finale at The Diamond Monday afternoon. The Flying Squirrels will send RHP Chris Heston (6-2, 1.36) to the mound. New Britain is expected to counter with right-hander Brett Jacobson (0-2, 6.69). First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 PM.
