Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - One night after taking their biggest loss of the season, turnabout was fair play for the Akron Aeros who rattled off 15 runs on 19 hits to roll by the Curve 15-4 before 5,551 Sunday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
Akron's hit and run parade started immediately with two runs in the first inning against Curve starter Phil Irwin and continued with two more in the third. Irwin (0-5) racked up a lot of strikeouts early but surrendered a lot of hits, as well. The righty surrendered four tallies on seven knocks through three innings, striking out six in the process.
Before the Curve got on the board for the first time, the Aeros were out in front 7-0 courtesy of a three-run fifth, Irwin's last frame. Altoona mustered only a meager charge at the plate in the bottom half, briefly getting back in the game with a two-run fifth. In that frame, Robbie Grossman and Brock Holt each drove in runs to make it a 7-2 score, but Akron starter Paolo Espino continued to cruise.
The Aeros provided Espino five more runs of insurance in the sixth and three in the seventh to go out in front 15-2. Espino (2-2) departed after six and one-third innings pitched, having struck out eight while allowing two runs on seven hits.
Altoona tallied two inconsequential runs in the ninth for the game's final ledger.
This series concludes Monday evening on a Mirror Monday presented by the Altoona Mirror at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Monday night is also the second edition of the Curve's 2012 Mascot Campaign Button Giveaways with a Tenacious button going to the first 1,000 fans through the gates. The Pirate Parrot will be in attendance for Monday's series finale, as well, as part of his Cruise for a Cure in support of prostate cancer research.
The series-concluding affair features a matchup of Curve righty Tim Alderson (3-3, 3.08) and Akron left-hander T.J. House (5-2, 3.12). With Altoona aiming for a series split, the finale is set for a 7 p.m. first pitch with gates opening at 6. Airtime on ESPN 1430 and the Curve Radio Network is slated for 6:30.
