Charleston RiverDogs News Release
GREENVILLE, S.C. - Ramon Flores went 4-for-6 with his first SAL home run as Charleston banged out 19 hits in an 11-2 romp of Greenville in South Atlantic League action at Fluor Field Wednesday evening.
The RiverDogs broke a three-game losing streak in improving to 3-4, while Greenville saw its win streak end at four straight in falling to 5-2. Charleston notched a season-high tying 19 base hits for the second time in the series led by Flores, who tied a career-high with his four hits. Greenville also committed five errors, after Charleston committed five on Tuesday night.
Charleston scored a single run in the first for a 1-0 lead courtesy of three straight two-out hits versus Greenville starter Kyle Stroup. Flores and J.R. Murphy singled, and Rob Segedin reached on an infield single that was stopped by shortstop Jose Garcia, but his toss to second base for a force attempt sailed wide allowing Flores to score for the early cushion.
Greenville tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom half on Bryce Brentz's RBI single off Charleston starter Nik Turley.
Kelvin Castro tripled to lead off the second and scored on a RBI single by Jose Mojica, re-giving Charleston the lead at 2-1.
The fourth inning proved to be quite lucrative for the RiverDogs offense, as four runs came plateward, growing the lead to 6-1. Anderson Feliz contributed a RBI groundout, while Flores and Segedin ripped non-consecutive RBI doubles, and Kelvin De Leon chipped in with a RBI double of his own.
Turley (1-0) settled down after the first inning, giving up just the one run in 5.0 solid innings on five base hits, while walking two and striking out four in earning his first SAL win. Stroup (0-1) pitched 4.0 innings in the loss, allowing six runs on a career-high 12 hits, with a walk and three strikeouts.
Flores clocked his first SAL home run, a solo shot, in the sixth inning to lengthen the lead to 7-1.
Sean Coyle struck his first SAL home run in the seventh inning to close the RiverDogs lead to 7-2.
Charleston, though, scored four more runs in the eighth inning aided by two more Greenville errors, making the score 11-2. Murphy ripped a two-run single, while Segedin added a sacrifice fly and De Leon roped a RBI single.
Murphy and Mojica ratcheted three base hits for the RiverDogs, while Segedin, De Leon Eduardo Sosa and Slade Heathcott had two hits each. It was the fifth straight multi-hit game for Heathcott, who has not only hit in all six games he has played this season, but is second in the SAL with 13 hits, nine of which have gone for extra bases.
The season-opening eight-game road trip for the RiverDogs concludes Thursday night at 7 p.m. in Greenville, with Charleston sending right-hander Mikey O'Brien (0-0, 3.00 ERA) to the firing line against Drive righty Anthony Ranaudo (1-0, 0.00 ERA), the 39th overall pick in the 2010 Draft out of LSU.
