Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Rome, GA - Matt Lipka's RBI single lifted the Rome Braves to a 6-5 victory over the Augusta GreenJackets in 14 innings on Wednesday afternoon in Rome.
After the Augusta bullpen held the Braves scoreless from the sixth inning forward, the Lipka game-winner came as the third of three consecutive singles off Shawn Sanford (0-1). All told, four Augusta relievers - Gaspar Santiago, Edward Concepcion, Matt Graham and Sanford - held the Braves to one run on six hits in 7.1 innings.
Trailing 5-3 in the ninth, the GreenJackets rallied when Ydwin Villegas reached first on a dropped third strike and scored on a fielding error to bring Augusta to within a run. With the tying run at third in pinch runner Chris Lofton, and a 2-1 count on Carlos Willoughby, Braves reliever Kyle Mertins uncorked a wild pitch with two outs that allowed Lofton to score the tying run in the ninth and send the game to extras.
Rome struck first with three runs in the first inning off Mario Rodriguez. Salcedo tripled home a pair, and then scored himself on a fielding error to give the Braves an early 3-0 lead. Augusta got a run back in the fifth on a groundout, but Rome added a fourth run of their own on Reyes's fourth-inning RBI single. The GreenJackets got two more in the sixth on a Carlos Willoughby RBI double and an Adam Duvall run-scoring single, but Rome added another in the sixth to keep the lead at two.
The GreenJackets had their share of chances in extras, stranding two runners each in the 11th and 13th innings and leaving the bases loaded in the 12th. All told, the GreenJackets stranded 13 men on the basepaths. Rome blew most of their chances by hitting into double plays, as Augusta doubled the Braves up five times in the contest.
Danilo Alvarez (1-0) allowed one hit over the final inning and two-thirds to get the win for Rome.
The GreenJackets send Seth Rosin (0-0) to the mound on Thursday to try and salvage the series split with the Braves, who'll throw lefty Steven Kent. First pitch will come at 7:05 with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
The GreenJackets play their home opener on Friday April 15th at 7:35 p.m. against the West Virginia Power. Single-game and Season Tickets are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
